Fighting Extremism

Metro Council is a nonpartisan position, but I am a registered Republican and I’ve been a registered Republican my whole adult life. I’ve been advised to drop my registration to run for this position but I haven’t done it for one reason: influence.

In both 2019 and 2021 I was elected as a delegate to attend the Oregon Republican Party Platform Convention where Republican leaders from across the state get together to amend the Party Platform, essentially the document that is supposed to represent the views of the 700,000+ Republicans in the state.

In 2019 I stood up in front of these 200 leaders and made the motion to remove anti-Trans language from the platform. Unfortunately, my motion was unsuccessful, but in 2021 I was successful at removing a plank that would have required all government business to be conducted in English, which would be an enormous and unnecessary burden to our immigrant communities.

Also in 2021, as the Multnomah County Republicans descended into extremism, I was one of the principal members who pushed back. The ensuing battle was documented locally by Willamette Week and nationally by Talking Points Memo

Being involved in the Republican Party has given me opportunities to stand up for my beliefs in ways that wouldn’t be available to a nonaffiliated voter.
